Questions
to Ask Before Hiring a Web Designer
Right now, you're probably interested in hiring someone to
design a website for you. But not all web design companies are
created equal. Here are some important questions that you
should ask a website designer before you consider starting a
project.
1. Do you have an office? Some designers work from home, and
possibly outsource your project to overseas web developers.
Ideally, you would hire a firm that has an actual physical
location, with in-house designers. This is a good sign that
you're dealing with a credible business.
2. Can you show me results of your work? Almost any web
designer can build a site, but few will know how to properly
promote it, or get you ranked well on search engines like Google. Ask them to email you concrete examples of their
clients ranking well for their target keywords. In other
words, their clients should show up on the first page of
Google for searches related to their product or service - not
just searches for the name of that business.
3. Are there client comments and testimonials that I can read?
This is critical. A qualified and experienced design company
should almost always receive positive comments from their
clients. These testimonials should be made available to new
potential clients, along with links to the actual work done
(not just a generic comment with a partial name). It's usually
a bad sign if you visit a design company's website, and you
can't find any positive comments from their clients. How do
you know that they will really deliver?
4. Will I own the website after you design it? Some design
companies have fine print that states that if you stop paying
them, they can take the site down. Make sure that the firm you
hire gives you complete freedom to take full control of your
site to do with as you please after it is online.
5. Can I see some working examples of your websites? If you
want to do business with a credible company, ask for samples.
Don't settle for just pictures of websites that they claim to
have developed. Ask to see a portfolio of websites that are
still up and running, or for links to samples of their work.
6. What happens if I don't like the samples you design? It's
good to know what a designer will do if you simply aren't
happy with the work done. Do they keep a deposit? Do they
offer a refund? Will they offer to keep working on it, but
charge you extra for revisions? Many web design companies make
their money from new revisions that you ask for, only they
don't mention this to you before the project starts.
In closing, what you really need to know is if the design firm
you are talking to has concrete examples of getting the job
done. You will want to hire a credible web design company, one
with plenty of clients willing to say that they were happy
with the work done. More importantly, you should know that
they have experience in getting their clients to rank well on
Google.
