Endowments represent the University’s permanently invested
capital that generates funds (annual interest/dividend
earnings) to support the University.
Many donors have established endowments with their gifts to
Northwestern State University. Each donor decides which area
of the University they wish to assist with their endowment.
Each endowment also provides the donor with a permanent naming
opportunity. Oftentimes, endowment funds are named for the
donor(s), for loved ones of the donor(s), or for someone for
whom the donor(s) have great admiration, i.e., a respected
faculty member.
Each year the University makes available part of the endowment
earnings for whatever purpose the donor(s) selected when the
endowment fund was established. To protect against inflation,
and to help each donor’s endowment fund grow over time, part
of the endowment earnings each year are added back to the
endowment principal.
Student Scholarships
Endowed
scholarships help ensure that higher education remains
available to distinguished and deserving students regardless
of their financial circumstances.
An endowed
scholarship is a permanent tribute to the person whose name it
bears, and it can always be augmented. In many families,
adding to a scholarship fund established years ago has become
a multi-generational tradition.
A named endowment
scholarship at NSU can be established with a gift of $10,000
or more. Gifts may be made at one time or over a period of
years.
Donors may select
the college and/or department from which a student will be
selected each year to receive their scholarship.
Donors of endowed
scholarships receive annual reports from the NSU Foundation on
the financial status of their endowment fund as requested.
Distinguished
Professorships
Endowed
professorships help ensure that the University can attract and
retain distinguished and effective professors. Annual stipends
are awarded to faculty members who are awarded such
professorships. Professorships are very prestigious, and the
faculty member who receives such distinction carries the name
of the donor.
A named endowment
professorship at NSU can be established with a gift $60,000
which is augmented with a $40,000 match from the State of
Louisiana’s Board of Regents Support Fund (BORSF).
Donors may select
the college and/or department from which a professor will be
selected to receive their professorship.
Donors of endowed
professorships receive annual reports from the NSU Foundation
on the financial status of their endowment fund as requested.
Eminent Scholar
Chairs
Endowed eminent
scholar chairs are used to help support the teaching and
research work of nationally recognized professors.
A named endowed
chair at NSU can be established with a gift of $600,000 which
is augmented with a $400,000 match from the State of
Louisiana’s Board of Regents Support Fund (BORSF). A super
chair can be created when a donor contributes $1.2 million and
the BORSF matches it with $800,000.
Donors may select
the college and/ or department from which a professor will be
selected to receive their chair.
Donors of endowed
chairs receive annual reports from the NSU Foundation on the
financial status of their endowment fund as requested.
Faculty
Development Funds
Donors can help
support the work of faculty members in a particular college
and/ or department by creating an endowed faculty development
fund.
A named endowed
faculty development fund at NSU can be established with a gift
of $10,000 or more.
Donors of endowed
faculty development funds can receive annual reports on the
financial status of their endowment fund as requested.
