How Long
Does it Take to Get a Website on Google?
If you already have a website, or plan to have one decided,
you're probably wondering about how to get that site on Google.
There are three major search engines: Google, Yahoo and Bing
(formerly MSN Search). Those search engines, in that order,
are the only three that count.
Did you know that 85% of all website traffic and 70% of all
online purchases start at one of those search engines? For
those reasons, it's important to get your site listed on
Google.
Once your new website is online, it can take anywhere from a
day to several weeks or even months to get on Google.
How fast your site gets listed depends on
two main things:
1. If your website has been properly "optimized" for Google by
a professional web designer.
2. If your website has other sites linking to it.
If a web designer suggests that you submit your site to Google
in order to be found, odds are that they aren't knowledgeable
about search engines. The truth is that you don't need to
manually submit your site. That process can sometimes take
weeks.
If an existing website puts a link to your site somewhere on
theirs, Google will find it quickly. Google sends out little
"robots" to websites that it already includes in its search
results. When one of those robots finds a link to your site on
an existing one, it follows that link to your website. It then
collects information about your site, and reports back to
Google.
An experienced web designer will usually link to your
website from another established one, helping Google to find
you immediately. Instead of waiting for weeks to get listed,
you can find your site on Google in just 24 hours, if the site
linking to you has already been online for a while. Think of
it as a popularity contest, Google has a popular site telling
it, "Hey, check this other site out."
If your site has been properly optimized for certain keywords,
then Google's robots will get a good idea of what your site is
about. It takes that info back to Google. That not only helps
you get listed, but it will help you get found if someone
searches for words related to your website.
So if you want to get your site listed on Google, and start
getting results fast, make sure that the web designer you hire
knows everything about search engine optimization (SEO). Not
only that, make sure that they can show you concrete results
of their clients ranking well on Google for target keywords
(not just searches related to their business name!)
